He represented the USSR, specializing in the hammer throw. Youri began athltetics in 1967 and in 1973 he became a member of the USSR National Junior team. He set 6 World Records between 1980 and 1986. He threw over 80m every year from 1980 to 1992 and has throw over 85m 21 times. He set the current world record of 86.74m (284'7) at the 1986 European Championships.
